Writing Practice for Stressful Times

Dear friends and fellow writers,

 

I hope all of you are doing well during this challenging time.

 

Perhaps you're in need of an activity that will ground and center you, that will take your attention away from the news of the moment, that will help you focus.

 

Writing practice can do all of those things--as well as build your writing skills.

 

So I invite you to take ten or fifteen minutes, whenever you can, to sit down with your notebook or computer and select a technique to practice.

 

If you need to vent, you may find some non-stop writing (freewriting) helpful. (If this exercise makes you uncomfortable, then stop.) Or you may prefer more structured mental exercise, such as focused freewriting (in How to be a Writer and at wherewriterslearn.com) or practicing craft techniques like parts of speech or kernels or nominative absolutes (all in Spellbinding Sentences).  Such practices can corral the runaway mind and give it focus, calming fear and anxieties.
